The Beginnings

John Hume was born in Rosemount in Derry on January 18 1937 and grew up in the nearby Glen, both working-class areas of the city where Catholics and Protestants lived side-by-side. Hume’s father, also John, worked as a riveter in the shipyard and he was the eldest of seven children reared in a traditional Derry Catholic family.

SDLP Party Formed

The SDLP — Social Democrat and Labor Party — was founded on 21 August 1970, by six Stormont MPs  including Hume, two Independents, and one Senator.  The party’s nationalist platform distinguished itself from the province’s other leftist and Republican groups by its commitment to political and nonviolent means of uniting Northern Ireland with the Irish republic.
The SDLP would become the first nationalist party to occupy a government position in Northern Ireland. Hume would lead the party from 1979 to 2001.
